Another rule is that there can be no more than 3 of the same cut depths in a row. This means that a 1&4 cut depths can't be side by side. For example, there can be a maximum of 2 cut depth changes between adjacent positions. While this calculates to 65536 key combinations, making keys that can actually be cut and/or inserted into a lock means that some combinations are unused. Each of the 4 key depths is associated with a unique cut wafer/tumbler in the lock. Each double sided key has 8 positions which can be cut to 4 depths (AFAIK, the locks in the doors use just 7 tumblers, so read just 7 of the 8 positions on the key). The locks that Dodge used in my Durango, and are also used in a lot of other Dodge models, are technically known as an 8 wafer tumbler, side bar lock. However, as I'm at least the 4th owner of my 2005 Durango, there's no way to know if somewhere along the line, my vehicle hasn't been re-keyed, so I couldn't be sure if an expensive Dodge supplied replacement key will actually fit my vehicle.Īs I had been having problems with my ignition lock due to wear, I bought an unencoded ignition lock replacement kit, and in the process of assembling that lock to match my keys, I learned a lot about this particular Dodge key and lock system. I have just a single key with a transponder for my 2005 Durango (the second key is missing the transponder electronics), and for a while I was considering ordering a replacement key from Dodge (cost at the moment is CAD$172 + tax). Lose those keys, and you're up for a locksmith that can match a key to your lock, and this won't be a cheap process.

There are a number of services around that have access to the Dodge data and can supply this data (usually for a fee).īut what happens if somewhere along the line, your vehicle has been re-keyed and now your key code no longer matches the data that Dodge has for your vehicle.

Also attached to your VIN is the original PIN/SKIM code if your vehicle has a Transponder key. Attached to your VIN, somewhere in a Dodge data base, is the code for your keys that tell locksmiths how to cut the key. If you ever lose the keys to your Durango, and you no longer have the information that was supplied with the keys when your vehicle was delivered, it is possible to get a replacement key from Dodge by supplying your VIN.
